Who is Ninoy Aquino?
Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. is a Filipino politician who served as a Senator in the Philippines from year 1962 to 1972, during the presidency of Ferdinand E. Marcos. He was one of Ferdinand Marcos' most outspoken critics and acts as the chief opposition leader during Marcos’ era of dictatorship.
Aquino suffered from a heart attack and went to the US to seek medical treatment. After his surgery, he flew back to the Philippines with plans of participating in the upcoming elections, however, he was assassinated while leaving the airplane at Manila Airport. Speculations are made that his death was under the orders of Marcos, resulting to an uproar from the general public.
Importance of Ninoy Aquino in the Philippine History
"Ninoy" Aquino Jr.’s assassination paved the way for his widow, Corazon Aquino to launch the "People Power" movement in 1986. The People Power Revolution, also known as EDSA Revolution, is a nonviolent revolution which gathered millions of unarmed Filipino civilians to march along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), with the goal of ending former President Marcos’ era of dictatorship. This peaceful revolution led to the removal of Marcos from power, ending his two decades of presidency, and restoring the Philippine democracy. Corazon Aquino was then inaugurated as the 11th President of the Philippines, making her the first woman to hold the Philippine Presidential office.
