Labor Day Origin
Labor Day is celebrated to honor all laborers or workers from various industries. Aside from the United States, many other countries around the world celebrate this day, though the dates of celebration may vary. To most countries, Labor Day is celebrated on the 1st day of May, just like in the Philippines, Bolivia, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, and Bahrain, among many others.
How did Labor Day start in the US?
Around late 19th century, trade unions and labor movements in the United States campaigned for a day set aside to celebrate and recognize labor from all working men and women. Many early trade and labor union organizations continuously promoted the idea of having a ‘Labor Day’ celebration – that include the Central Labor Union (a trade union organization in the US) and the Knights of Labor (an American labor federation). These organizations are responsible for the success of the nation’s first Labor Day parade which took place in New York City on September 5, 1882. Thousands of workers have participated on this parade, marching from the state’s City Hall to the Union Square in Manhattan.
When did Labor Day become a holiday?
Labor Day was declared as an official federal holiday in the United States on June 28, 1894. President Grover Cleveland legalized a bill making the first Monday of September the date of observance for Labor Day. Since then, this holiday has been observed by the Americans each year.
Common Practices during Labor Day
While some workers take Labor Day to call for better working conditions and benefits, majority of the American people take this day to do some fun activities. Most of them spend this day with friends, family, and relatives. Many areas in the United States arrange public events such as music festivals, firework displays, sports events, street parades, fairs, and concerts. A Labor Day Capitol Concert is even traditionally organized in Washington, D.C. every year – held at the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Since it offers free admission to the public, the concert attracts the attendance of thousands of Americans.
Decorating for Labor Day
Decorating for Labor Day has become a practice for some people in the United States. Some Americans typically decorate their homes using materials such as paper lanterns, red pennant banners, confetti-filled balloons, star streamers garland, patriotic banners, and so on. These decorations are also used in preparation for a Labor Day Party. People often say greetings like “Happy Labor Day” or “Have a relaxing Labor Day Weekend” for those who would go on a weekend getaway.
Holiday Getaway
Taking a vacation for the long weekend is also customary. As Labor Day is observed on a Monday, it creates a long weekend for the Americans. So, many take advantage of this break by going on a short holiday getaway. For the students, it is their chance to go on a trip or vacation before school starts again.
Picnics and Barbecues
Picnics and barbecues are common during Labor Day in the United States. Many families host their own barbecues and relatives as well as friends are oftentimes invited. For this holiday, traditional foods seen served at the table usually include grilled chicken, cheeseburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, and some desserts.
