Is Hari Raya Puasa a public holiday in Singapore?
Hari Raya Puasa (also known as Eid al Fitr or Hari Raya Aidilfitri) is an Islamic holiday celebrated by the Muslims in Singapore and other countries. This is held on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the lunar Islamic calendar and is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan – Muslims’ religious month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
Since the lunar Islamic calendar is different from the solar based Gregorian calendar, Hari Raya Puasa’s celebratory date on the Gregorian calendar varies each year. Singapore’s government also declared this day as a public holiday; therefore, many business establishments closed along with all schools and other public institutions.
Hari Raya Puasa Origin

About Hari Raya Puasa
Hari Raya Puasa recognizes the victory that comes along with one’s successful completion of Ramadan. Ramadan is the 9th month of the lunar Islamic calendar (also known as the Hijri calendar) where all capable adult Muslims are obliged to fast for the whole month – with the exception of those who are physically or mentally ill, traveling, children under the age of puberty, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, and menstruating. Fasting is a religious practice where one abstains from consuming any kinds of food and drinks. For the Muslims, this is an important tradition they need to observe during Ramadan. Eating, drinking, smoking, sexual activities, and behaviors that are considered sinful must be avoided for this month. The whole month is instead used for praying, reflecting, reading the Quran (holy book of Islam), and getting closer to God. Thus, once Ramadan is over, Hari Raya Puasa is then celebrated. Hari Raya Puasa is held for the Muslims to celebrate their triumph in completing the fast and being able to prevail over their personal struggles during the month of Ramadan.
Hari Raya Puasa Traditions in Singapore
Hari Raya Puasa is an Islamic holiday where Muslims get to strengthen their bonds towards their families, relatives, and friends. Apologies are uttered and children often ask forgiveness from their parents and elders from all wrongdoings committed. On this day, the kids may also receive monetary gifts placed inside a green envelope from the adult members of the family.
Mosque visits
Visiting mosques (traditional place of worship for the Muslims) is a customary practice for the Muslims during Hari Raya Puasa. Therefore, during its observance, Muslims in Singapore visit mosques early in the morning to offer prayers and extend gratitude to Allah for the blessings received in life. As part of the celebration, these mosques are usually decorated with lights too. Other Muslims may also clean and decorate their homes with oil lamps, lanterns, lights, and others.
Wearing traditional clothes
One of the reasons which made Hari Raya Puasa fascinating is how the Muslims dressed up for the day. Muslim men and women in Singapore are typically seen donning on their traditional clothes. Women are dressed up in either a baju kurung (an enclosed dress and a traditional Malay costume), a jubah (which is like a long coat that resembles a cloak or robe), or a kebaya (a traditional blouse-dress). Muslim men, on the other hand, may wear a baju melayu (consisting of the baju which is a long-sleeved shirt and the seluar which is the trousers). A cap known as songkok is sometimes worn by other Muslim males.
Giving donations to the underprivileged
Giving donations (zakat al-fitr) to the needy is an established practice for the Muslims during this holiday. Muslims in Singapore and other countries continuously followed this tradition to this day. Donations given can either be money, food, or clothing and are usually prepared few days before Ramadan ends.
Enjoying traditional dishes
Considering the month-long fasting, many families look forward to enjoying the tasty dishes served after the end of Ramadan. Dishes prepared for Hari Raya Puasa traditionally include bubur lambuk (rice porridge), rendang (spicy meat dish), lontong (compressed rice cakes added in curries or stews), ketupat (rice cake), lemang (made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and salt), satay (skewered and grilled meat), kuih (snack or dessert foods that are often sweet, though others might be savoury), kue lapis (layered sticky rice cake or pudding), and dodol (sweet confection).
