Is Father's Day a public holiday in Canada?

In Canada, Father’s Day is observed to honor fatherhood every third Sunday of June. Though Father’s Day is not a public holiday, many Canadians celebrate this day to show appreciation and give respect to all fathers and father figures. Since the occasion is not declared a statutory holiday, on this day, Canada’s educational institutions, public establishments, and businesses operate on their regular schedules.

Fathers's Day Origin

Canada, like more than 80 countries in the world, also celebrate Father’s Day. Father’s Day is a day meant to honor all fathers and father figures and the important role they play in one’s family.

How did Father’s Day begin?

Most people believe that Father’s Day celebration originated in the United States. There are two different stories of how this occasion began. Many believed it was Sonora Smart Dodd who’s the real founder of Father’s Day. Her idea of celebrating Father’s Day came to life when she attended a mass with a church sermon about Mother’s Day. She thought fathers aren’t recognized the same way mothers are honored on Mother’s Day. Her father was widowed, yet he raised her and her siblings well. If mothers are honored during Mother’s Day, she felt that honoring fatherhood is needed as well, so she raised that to her pastor. On June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane Washington.

On the other hand, other people believe that honoring fatherhood had already happened prior to that. Some people believe that it was on July 5, 1908 – when Grace Golden Clayton organized the first public Father’s Day celebration in Fairmont, West Virginia. She came up with an idea to honor fathers when a mine explosion killed over 300 men, most of them are fathers. However, regardless of who the real founder is, the United States’ celebration of Father’s Day became widespread. Many countries around the world embraced the idea of Father’s Day celebration and one of which is Canada.

Father's Day Traditions in Canada

Father’s Day is the best day for us to show our appreciation and love for our fathers. In Canada, each family has their own ways of celebrating Father’s Day. Most families would often resort to using conventional means to celebrate it though – that includes giving gifts, treating their dads to a special meal, watching movies, going fishing, and going to the parks or other place of interest for their dads.

Father's Day Greetings

Additionally, Canadians would also say “Happy Father’s Day”. They would greet their fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, fathers-in-law, foster parents, uncles, and other men who stand and acted as a father figure to them. Those who live far away from their dads or father figures would likely call to greet them a Happy Father’s Day.

Giving gifts for dads

The traditions on Father’s Day celebration can be varied. In Canada, people show their love and gratitude for their fathers in different yet meaningful ways. Some would give gifts like mobile devices (like smartphones or computer tablets), useful tools, books, clothes, neckties, socks, electronic devices, and other items which their dads look forward to having. Other children may offer Father’s Day greeting cards, chocolates, and flowers.

Sharing a Father’s Day meal

Many Canadian families would love to take their father out to eat in a restaurant either for lunch or dinner on Father’s Day. This practice is one of the most established traditional practices still followed in Canada until now. Treating their dads to a fancy meal is one of the best ways to show their love and appreciation for him on this special day. While eating outside is a popular choice taken by many, other families may prefer to stay home and prepare their own version of a Father’s Day meal. Pairing this meal with their dads’ favorite drink is the perfect way to go.
