Eid al-Fitr Traditions in the Philippines

For the Muslim Filipinos, Eid al-Fitr is a day for special prayers, giving donations, and hosting large feasts to be enjoyed by families and friends alike.

Special Prayers

Like Muslims in other countries, Filipino Muslims also celebrate Eid al-Fitr by visiting the mosques closest to their residences. Mosque refers to the place of worship for the Muslims. They gather together with the other faithful to listen to khutbah (sermon) and offer prayers. The prayers offered are called Eid prayers, or also known as ‘Salat al-Eid’, a special prayer only offered during the occurrence of two Islamic festivals – Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. These prayers are traditionally conducted in large congregations and have been part of the Muslim traditions for a long time.

Giving Donations

It is also customary for the Muslim Filipinos to give donations called zakat al-Fitr during Eid al-Fitr. Zakat al-Fitr is a charity that privileged Muslims traditionally hand out to the needy. It could be in the form of food or money.
