Is Easter Saturday a public holiday in Philippines?

Easter Saturday, also known as Holy Saturday or Black Saturday, is one of the significant Christian holiday commemorations for the Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the country. The holiday is audibly known for its local term as Sabado de Gloria or Sabado Santo in the Philippines. It is observed every Saturday after Good Friday and before Easter Sunday, which falls on April 12 in this year. Moreover, the holiday commemorates the day after Jesus Christ got crucified and the day he was laid on his tomb after his death. It is the third and last public national holiday in the Holy Week. All schools are certainly closed as well as most major businesses, organizations, establishments, and banks.

About Easter Saturday

The recognized local term ‘Sabado de Gloria’ was a Spanish counterpart for Gloria Saturday. It served as the local term for the holiday in view of the fact that the country was colonized by the Spanish Empire a long time ago around 1500s era. It is of no surprise that the current culture in the Philippines, be it religious or any form of festivities, is highly influenced by Spanish culture due to the fact that the Philippines was under Spanish colonization for over 3 centuries. In particular, the Philippines was under Spanish colony for 333 years. Many Christian holidays were observed when Filipinos begun to embrace and believed the Spanish influence which is Christianity. One of which is Holy Week along with its one of the holidays, Easter Saturday. The typical term known by many which is Black Saturday, the designated colloquial term originally came from the indicated color which is ‘Black’ signifying that the color means mourning or sorrow.


Easter Saturday Traditions in the Philippines

Christians are solemnly advised to have fasted to recall the suffering of Jesus. They are also not allowed to eat meat except for fish. It is common for some restaurants that remain open to temporarily replace their menu with fish, other than meat. Filipinos take this Christian holiday so important and as a sign of respect, they do this to repent their sins and understand how important this holiday is. Even the shows on the television or radios doesn’t follow the regular shows on air in fact, it shows the sufferings of Jesus. Considering that most of the people in the Philippines are Christians, they would spend the whole day remembering how Jesus Christ suffered. This is the perfect time for Filipinos to show sincerity and love to each member of the family.

Holy Week is a long weekend that is why some Filipinos would pass time having some rest. Some families would also go out of town but won’t go swimming. Filipinos have this superstitious belief to not go to swimming during Easter for they believe that it is a bad luck for them most particularly during three o’clock in the afternoon, the time when Jesus died.

Easter Vigil

During the evening of the Easter Saturday, Easter Vigil is observed since it is the common hour to commemorate the observance. Easter Vigil would take place between the sunset of Easter Sunday and the sunrise of Easter Sunday at times. This service is done to commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. On the evening of Easter Saturday in the church, the night is filled with darkness. The time when the minister would enter the church bringing the Paschal candle go along with the chant ‘The light of Christ’ with its respond as ‘Thanks be to God’, all the candles would light up after getting the blessing of the Paschal candle. The candles in the church would fire up using the Paschal candle and the church would brighten up. Easter Vigil would take to one and a half hour to two hours to end.
