Such tradition is rooted from a folklore claiming that two ladies of Hallaton were saved by hare (a rabbit-like animal) from an enraged bull. The hare did such by distracting the bull. The incident led them to donate money to church as a way of showing gratitude to God from a belief that it was God who sent the hare to save them from the bull. Even in present times, this old Leicestershire practice is still existent and remains a tradition.
